At AIR we don't play favorites. we love each and every member exactly as much as the next. You're all indies, you're all fightin the good fight, you're releasing excellent music off your own back out of choice or necessity. It's rad!
Except there's one label that I had the pleasure to speak to the other week who make me feel a bit warm and fuzzy more than most. They almost ALL of their content via Cassette. Why you say? I'll tell you why... they're called Tracks Of The Desert and they release predominantly Indigenous Gospel Music. It's a niche market but as they're based in Alice Springs they're right in the middle of that niche. The problem is that having a label based in the middle of the Australian desert is that you can't listen to CD's on the road. It's been a long time since a CD skipped in my car, but that's coz I drive on the paved streets of Melbourne... I imagine that my falcon's CD player would start struggling a little while going offroad over over sand, corrugated roads, pot holes the size of a moon crater and rocks the size of my head (big). It's a decision born out of practicality. Cassettes don't skip!
Anyway, then there's the Red Riders... who's chief demographic ain't hymn singin ute drivers in the outback. No, they're hipsters from the big smoke. Indie kids who like jangly guitrars, sweet melodies and a beat you can dance to. They've released an EP through Ivy League and if you're quick you can by a limited edition copy of it on cassette.
the EP, Lost In Colour has been making a splash on the AIR charts and this song 'Ordinary' is the pick o the bunch. It's a nice blend of meloncholy and upbeatness... my friend reckons it's "kind of a manchesier sound... early 90's"... hmmmm... Whatever... It's a great song.
