I recently had the pleasure of talking with Bradley J. Conomy who is a long time friend of Leroy Lee and is also the producer of his video clip for the new single Mountain Song. I love this clip for its simplicity and the quality of the shooting. It actually took me back to the late 70s and early 80s when my old man used to shoot all of our family holidays using a Super 8 film camera. We'd then we'd assemble in the living room after receiving them back from the developer to watch on the whitest wall in the house. I gave Bradley a few themes to work with for the interview and this is what we came up with.
Leroy Lee and I have been working and developing ideas for film clips for a long time. We have known each other since childhood so we are comfortable with bouncing ideas off each other and working towards a concept we are both comfortable with.
GEAR & EQUIPMENT
I had a Canon Super 8 film camera (commonly used for home-movies in the 70's and 80's) that I have had sitting untested in my studio. I shot and developed a test roll which seemed okay.
Shooting Super 8 was a risk because you can not see immediately what has been filmed because it needs to be sent off for developing before you know if the film exposed. So I had to shoot and manually set the exposure based on my knowledge of lighting for video and photography. This was a tremendous amount of pressure as this was my first experience working with film stock.
I had 12-mins of footage to cut a 3-4 min song. That is a VERY narrow ratio for music video.
CONCEPT
Leroy Lee came up with the 'one man band' concept which we then morphed into a 'loner character' wandering the streets. Leroy did not really want a literal representation of the lyrics, no performance or any story-line which was challenging but we both like that kind of anti-clip anyway.
